The incremental cost of a WiFi-enabled 4G camera over a 4G-only model is usually modest; the redundancy value justifies it in medium-to-high-risk scenarios.

Conversely, if your site has no broadband, poor WiFi coverage, or if the camera is mounted far from buildings, WiFi adds complexity and cost with no benefit. A robust 4G solution with sufficient data allowance and good signal coverage is simpler and more cost-effective. Discuss your site’s connectivity profile with your installer before defaulting to dual-connectivity models.

What questions should you ask before choosing a 4G camera?

Start with coverage. Does the 4G network have adequate signal at your proposed camera location? Your installer can survey the site or provide maps showing signal strength. Next, ask whether your preferred camera model includes WiFi, and if so, whether it supports failover logic or requires manual switching. Request the specification sheet and confirm both connectivity types are listed.

Finally, clarify your data plan. A 4G camera with insufficient monthly data allowance will not perform reliably, regardless of WiFi redundancy. Discuss expected video resolution, upload frequency, and peak usage hours with your supplier. If the site has broadband, ask whether the WiFi network is private and stable enough to share with security equipment, or whether a separate access point is advisable.
